Keyword : Effectiveness, Three Step Interview, Speaking Achievement Speaking is one skill which have to be learned by the students. Learning speaking is likely to be one of the biggest challenges that student will face in their studies. For Indonesian students, they have to study English language as the foreign language. English is still considered as a difficult subject for the students because it is completely different from Indonesian language in the system of structure, pronunciation, vocabulary, etc. In fact, there are many students nowadays who cannot speak well. This phenomenon happened in SMKN 1 Bandung Tulungagung where most of the students of the tenth grade cannot speak fluently. Through the preliminary study conducted before doing the research, the English teacher showed that the students’ achievement in speaking is very low. It can be seen through their score which cannot reach the standard criterion that is 70. This problem is because they have no confidence to show off their ability and they felt afraid of making mistakes in their speaking. Due to this matter, it is necessary to find out an alternative technique which can help the students’ achievement in speaking. Thus, the researcher intended to verify if the Three Step Interview (TSI) technique is effective to improve students’ achievement in speaking. The research problem is (1)” Is there any significant effect of using Three Step Interview technique for student’s achievement at speaking?”. The research objectives is (1)” to find out if it is effective to use Three Step Interview (TSI) technique in teaching speaking”. Method of research used quasi experimental design with quantitative approach in the form of two group pre- test and post- test in which one group becomes experimental and the other becomes control group. The population of this research was all of tenth grade students at SMKN 1 Bandung Tulungagung consist of 20 classes in 6 programs and the total of the students were 720 students. The sample was X AKL2 as experimental class which consist of 35 students and X TKJ 4 as control class which consist of 35 students. Data analysis of this research was using independent sample T test with SPSS 16.0. After doing the analysis by using SPSS then concluded that the value of significance of t-test is 0.000 smaller than 0.05 then means H0 rejected automatically H1 is accepted. So the result of this study indicate that there is a significant effect of student’s mean score. It means three step interview technique is effective to improve on the tenth grade students’ achievement in speaking at SMKN 1 Bandung Tulungagung.
