Abstract

Code switching used in classroom interactions between an Indonesian tutor and Patani students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Faizatul Istiqomah, M.Ed. Keywords: Bilingualism, Code switching. Code switching is potentially the most creative aspect of bilingual speech. It is a change made by a speaker from one language or language variety to another one. We usually find the use of code switching in teaching and learning. Many students use code switching because they rarely use English as their language in daily conversation. The purposes of using code switching are to easily convey the materials and understand the material conveyed, so that the code switching gives the positive contribution among the students. The questions formulated by the researcher are 1) What types of code switching used in classroom interactions between an Indonesian tutor and Patani students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung? 2) What are the causes of code switching used in classroom interactions between an Indonesian tutor and Patani students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung? The purposes of the study are to know the types of Code switching used in classroom interactions between an Indonesian tutor and Patani students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung and the causes of Code switching used in classroom interactions between an Indonesian tutor and Patani students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung. Research Method in this research used a descriptive study using qualitative approach. The data source an Indonesia tutor and Patani students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung and. The research instruments are interview and observation. As the result, the researcher found the types of code switching namely (1) Inter sentential switching, (2) Intra sentential switching, (3) Emblematic switching. The researcher also found the causes of Code switching used in classroom interactions between an Indonesian tutor and Patani students of English department at IAIN Tulungagung those are: (1) Be emphatic. When speaker talking about language that is switch the language to express emphatic, it can used to strengthen this speaking or command. It found that emphatic about express solidarity in the condition the teacher switch Indonesia into English that would make students is calm and more confident, (2) Interjection. It means that the interjection here to soften the command that student will be understood, (3) Confirmation. The first was repetition for Indonesian and Thai to English translation or English to Indonesia and Thai translations and the second was confirm to assign an clarification or a specific command to the listener, (4) To make repetition for clarification and, (5) To show emphatic about something.
