Abstract

ABSTRACT Utami, Indah Y.T.W (1723143079). 2018 The Effectiveness Of Using Semantic Mapping Strategy Towards Students’ Reading Comprehension In Narrative Text Of The First Grade At SMAN 1 Bantur. Thesis of English Education Department at Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teachers’ Training State Islamic Institute Studies (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Susanto, SS.M.Pd. Keyword: Narrative Text, Reading Comprehension, Semantic Mapping Strategy. This research was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using semantic mapping strategy in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text and the significant difference on reading comprehension of narrative text between two groups: who were taught using Semantic Mapping Strategy and those who were taught using a conventional method. The formulation of the research problem: 1) How is the students’ reading narrative text achievement taught by using Semantic Mapping Strategy?, 2) How is the students’ reading narrative text achievement taught by using a conventional method?, 3) Is there significant difference score in reading narrative text of the students taught by using Semantic Mapping Strategy and those taught by using a conventional method?. The purpose of the research: 1)To know the students’ reading narrative text achievement taught by using Semantic Mapping Strategy. 2) To know the students’ reading narrative text achievement taught by using a conventional method. 3) To know whether there is significant difference score in reading narrative text of the students taught by using Semantic Mapping Strategy and those taught by using a conventional method. Research method used in this study was quantitative method. The research design in this study was experimental design with quantitative approach by using Quasi- Experimental Design with Nonrandomized, Control group, pretest – posttest design. The population of this study was the whole of the first grade students of SMAN 01 BANTUR that consist of 258 students, the sample were X IPA 1 class that consisting 29 students as experimental class and X IPA 3 class that consisting of 26 students as control class. The research instrument was test. In this research the data was analyze by using t-test, with the helped of SPSS Windows 16.0. The result showed that the mean achievement of the experimental group was higher than the mean achievement of the control group. While, the achievement of experimental class was 17.93 and achievement of control class was 11.35. The result of the research findings, the significant level (sig) is 0.002, and it is lower than 0.05 (0.002 < 0.05). it was found that there is significant difference of students achievement between who are taught by using Semantic Mapping Strategy and those who taught by using a conventional method. So, the null hypothesis stated that there is nosignificant difference on the students’ reading narrative text who are taught using Semantic Mapping Strategy and taught by using a conventional method was rejected. Based on the research conducted, it was proved that the use of Semantic Mapping Strategy in teaching reading narrative text to the first grade at SMAN 01 BANTUR is effective.
