Abstract

Keywords: learning strategy, speaking proficiency In learning speaking, the students need good preparation to express their feeling and ideas in speaking and discussion. Therefore, the students have various strategies they employ. They apply their own strategies to master it. In order to be able to communicate well, the students must have good capabilities in speaking. Some strategies should be made to enhance the students’ success in improving their speaking proficiency. This way demands the students to use their own learning strategies so that they are succesful in speaking. In this study, the researcher tries to find out the kinds of learning strategies employed by good speaking proficiency of the Second Grade Students and to find out the contributions of the learning strategy employed toward the improvement of their speaking proficiency. The research problem in this study: 1) What kinds of learning strategies are employed by the second grade students who are good in speaking at MAN 2 Tulungagung? 2) How are of the learning strategies employed by the second grade students who are good in speaking at MAN 2 Tulungagung contributive to improve their speaking proficiency?. The purpose of this study are: 1) To find out the kinds of learning strategies are employed by the second grade students who are good in speaking at MAN 2 Tulungagung. 2) to know the contributive of students’ learning strategies employed to improve speaking proficiency of the Second Grade Students at MAN 2 Tulungagung. The result of the research is expected to give some contributions for students, teachers, and future researchers. For the students, the finding of the research can be used as a new reference to learn English, especially speaking. They can adapt learning strategies in speaking used by good speaking proficiency of students. Hopefully, they will be more active and creative in learning speaking. Besides, they will be interested in learning speaking because they can select their own ways in improving their speaking appropriately. Meanwhile, for English teachers, the findings are expected to be useful contribution that can be transferred to learners based on their characteristics. By considering that each student may employ different learning strategy, teachers can take students learning strategies as the basis of instruction. On the basis of the findings, it can give opportunity for teachers to support students in improving their learning strategy. Finally, for future researchers, this thesis will give some contributions and information for future researchers about learning strategies in speaking used by the Second Grade Students at MAN 2 Tulungagung. The future researchers can develop this study to apply to different levels of students in their effort to improve their speaking performance. The subjects of this research are the selected students who are good in speaking proficiency at MAN 2 Tulungagung. The data in this research are the students’ learning strategies in speaking and its contribution for their speaking proficiency. This research employs a case study with qualitative approach. The methods used to collect the data are interview and observation. The method of data analysis is inductive method. The result of this research, the researcher finds various strategies in learning speaking employed by good speaking proficiency of the Second Grade Students at MAN 2 Tulungagung. They are (1) finding the meaning of new vocabulary by looking up dictionary, (2) making notes of new vocabulary, (3) providing some of new vocabularies per day, (4) memorizing the words before going to sleep, (5) applying new vocabulary to daily activity, (6) having grammar books and write one by one of tenses in a paper then glue it at room wall, (7) sharing with other friends or teacher about grammar, (8) accustoming to train pronunciation includes imitating the pronunciation of words, (9) understanding of the theme that will be spoken, (10) writing what will be spoken, (11) controlling of emotion include deadening nervous and enjoy, (12) keeping on to practice wherever they are. Meanwhile, those learning strategies give positive contributions toward students’ speaking proficiency. The students can enrich their vocabularies, grammar mastery, and pronunciation. Consequently, they can practice to speak in English satisfactorily. It means they have ability to speak English with various vocabularies with good grammar and pronunciation.
