Abstract

Key Words: Motivation, Students, Learning English. Motivation encourages someone to do something. Motivation is characterized by affective arousal. At the beginning it constitutes a psychological strain and the strata of emotion. The state of emotion will encourage a motivated behavior. Motivation is marked by responses to achieve the goal. A motivated person will make direct responses toward a certain goal. Formulation of the problem: 1) How are the motivations of the first year students of MTsN Tungggangri in learning English; how is their intrinsic motivation and how is their extrinsic motivation? 2) From the two types of motivations, which one is higher; intrinsic or extrinsic motivation? Objectives of the study: 1) To know the condition of the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of the students in learning English and 2) To know which one is higher between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in learning English of students in MTsN Tunggangri, especially for the first year students. Method of the research: 1) the research design used in this study is descriptive research with quantitative approach. 2) The objects of the research are 54 students the first year students at MTsN Tunggangri Kalidawir Tulungagung. 3) Variable of the research is single variable that is the motivation of the first year students in learning English. 4) The primary data are the student’s list score of questionnaire about the motivation in learning English. 5) Data collection methods are a) Distribute question sheet with the questionnaire as the instrument. b) Observation method with the instrument observation guide. c) Interview method with the instrument interview guide. d) Documentation method with the instrument documentation guide. 6) The analysis techniques data used quantitative data uses statistic percentage. The research finding: The intrinsic motivation is : 46,3 % who have outstanding criteria, 35,2 % have very good criteria, 16,7 % students have good criteria and 1,9 % students have fair criteria of motivation. The extrinsic motivation of students that is : criteria of outstanding 37,04 % and also very good criteria is 37,04 %, good criteria is 24,07 % and fair criteria is 1,9 % students. So, the conclusion from the tabulating data is that the higher motivation of the students in learning English is their intrinsic motivation.
