Abstract

ABSTARCT Pratama, Abi Dzikry. 1723143001, The Effectiveness of Vocabulary Self collection Strategy (VSS) on eighth grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMPI Anharul Ulum. Thesis. English Education Departmen. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. Keyword: Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS), Vocabulary Mastery. In learning English process, vocabulary have an important role because it helps students to be able to understand the information from written and spoken information. If the students do not have enough vocabulary they will get difficult in learning English so they must mastery vocabulary if they want good achievement in learning English. Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) is to help students to generate a list of words to be explored and learned to use their own prior knowledge and interest to enhance their vocabulary. It can increase the student’s enjoyment of the subject. The formulation of the research problem is : Is Vocabulary Self collection Strategy effective on eight grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMPI Anharul Ulum? Research method : 1) In this study the researcher used Quasi Experimental design with nonrandomized control group, pretest-posttest design, 2) The population in this research included the whole eight grades’ students of SMPI Anharul Ulum at the second semester in the academic year 2017/2018, 3) they were two classes as the sample of the study; they were VIII-C class consisted of 30 students as the experimental class and VIII-B class consisted of 30 students as the experimental class, 4) The research instrument was a test, 5) the data analysis was using T – test. The result showed that 1) Students’ achievement in vocabulary taught by using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy was very good. their mean score in pre-test is low than in post-test. It can be seen from their mean score of pre-test was 68.13 and their mean score of post-test was 72.40. the gain of the mean score of experimental class between pre-test and post-test was 4.27, 2) Students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery taught without using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy was fair. Their mean score in pre-test was low than in post-test. it can be seen from their mean score of pre-test was 59.13 and the mean score of post-test was 61.73. the gain of the mean score of control class between pre-test and post-test was 2.43, 3) Based on the statistical analysis using t-test with SPSS 16.0 for windows at the significant level of 0.05 the result of t-testshowed that significant value (sig-2 tailed) was 0.000, and it was smaller than 0.05 (0.000<0.05). In conclusion, there was a significant difference in the achievement between the students who were taught by using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy and those who taught without using Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy for eight grade students of SMPI Anharul Ulum in academic year 2017/2018, and we can say that Vocabulary Self-collection Strategy is effective on students’ vocabulary mastery at eight grades’ SMPI Anharul Ulum.
